This is my best card of Gossage: nice red White Sox uni, classic pitching pose (behind the batting cage).In 1975, Gossage pitched 142 innings of relief. Rivera has topped 100 just once and Hoffman has never gone above 90. I just found out that Goose actually started in 1976, going 9-17 (15 complete games) for a bad Sox team that only won 64 games.
Rickey is a lock next year and Rice needs about 16 more votes. I love the Hall of Fame and all the debates this time of year. Bill Simmons wrote a cool article on the Hall of Fame in 2002 and Rob Neyer is great if you are an espn insider or just a stathead.

A quick internet search yielded the following quip from Goose (circa 2006):
"Hitting in a game is no different than hitting in a home run contest. It pisses me off to say Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter. He's playing in a wussy era. The game is soft. You never get thrown at today. Last thing a hitter has to worry about today is getting hit. The first thing Hank Aaron had to worry about is: Am I going to survive this at-bat because I'm black."
It appears as though Goose is not impressed with today's game.
I was bummed that Henderson and Rice got shafted. Each voter gets three votes. How do you NOT pick the king of stolen bases? Goose was a no-brainer, but there were a couple others in there, too. Maybe I should figure out to become a HOF-worthy sports writer... :-)
David - Henderson will be on the ballot for the first time next year. He is a lock.
I disagree about Rice. Check out Rob Neyer's articles on ESPN. Sometime later in the year I'll be posting some HOF number crunching you might enjoy.
